Do I have a nickel Allergy?

Symptoms of a nickel allergy arise from contact, usually repeated contact with items containing the metal nickel or various nickel compounds.

Nickel Allergy- common symptoms

The most common symptom is chronic itching (purities). The itching is often combined with a red rash, raised bumps and broken skin. Itchy red rash around your belt buckle or blue jeans button that often contains nickel, or an itchy rash around your watch or on the ears in the case of nickel earrings. Itchy rash on ring finger or over areas where nickel-containing jewelry might be worn is often associated with this nickel sensitivity or allergy. As you are aware, I had suffered with a very persistent, wracking and almost paralyzing cough for 5 years prior to seeing you.  I had been to numerous doctors, including pulmonologists, allergists, etc. in three different states; but to no avail.  They seemed to focus on treating my symptoms (post nasal drip, cough, allergies, etc.)  with medications, but not looking at the underlying causes.  I have been on heavy doses of prednisone and every antihistamine, decongestant, inhaler; cough medication, nasal spray and antibiotic on the market.  I most recently was told I had Reactive Airway Inflammatory Disease (RAID); and I should just avoid anything that would make me cough-and continue to use antihistamines; allergy meds, inhalers and codeine cough medication.  Unfortunately I continued to cough all the time-cold weather, moist weather, cleaning products, smoke, talking, laughing etc.- all made me cough, and when the coughing got really bad, I would vomit.  How attractive!

This made it impossible to hold a job, as talking made me cough.  I couldn’t be out in public as smoking and auto exhaust made me cough.  People were always staring at me as though I had SARS.

This past July, a friend referred me to you.  I was skeptical, but by then, willing to try anything.  I remember coughing throughout our first meeting and the testing procedures.

I knew, in advance, what many of my “triggers” were, and they did show up on the test.

Dear Dr. Welch,

I want to thank you for the treatment I received on eliminating the discomfort of hives.  I have had chronic hives since 2003 off and on.  I received “pills” to alleviate the itching and control the hives.  I’ve had shots to control them.  I’ve been admitted to the ER several times as the hives were so bad around my mouth and nose that it was dangerous to my health.  They could have gone down my throat and choked me.

I’m not exactly sure how your new technology works but since I’ve had the treatments (only 3) I have had only one or two hives appear.  You don’t know how much 1-2 is compared to my whole body covered with them.  It is such a relief to not have to take the anti-histamines to keep them down only to come back the next day.  I don’t even take any medication when the 1-2 hives appear as they soon go away during the day. 

Again I thank you for giving me the relief and satisfaction of no more itching and being miserable because of the hives.  The other Doctors I’ve gone to could only treat me with medication.  One Doctor did a skin test and the results were:  I wasn’t allergic to anything!  Yet 2 days after seeing him, I broke out with the lots of hives.

A PATIENT THAT SUFFERED FROM CHRONIC SINUSITIS FOR YEARS!

Dear Dr. Welch:

I am finally taking the opportunity to write a referral letter regarding your allergy treatments. You have my permission to use this letter as a reference.

My history of allergies started when I lived in Houston and developed very severe allergies to molds. My tests showed that I had very high reactions to nine (9) types of molds, which grew primarily in decaying vegetation in moist climates, Houston being one of the worst places in the U.S. for such conditions. The allergies were so severe that I needed to move away from Houston, which brought me to Colorado.
